Tiny Debris Swarm in Geosynchronous Orbit Threatens Earth's Satellite Network
Astronomers reanalyzed archival data from the Isaac Newton Telescope using a new blind-stacking technique and found 25 previously undetected faint debris tracks in geosynchronous orbit. The tiny fragments, some as small as two inches, pose collision risks to high‑value satellites that orbit over Earth’s equator, and much of this debris comes from undocumented events. The team hopes to extend the search with additional telescopes to better map the GEO debris swarm and assess its overall threat.
