Will Zellers enters Bruins rookie camp with a chance to showcase speed and offensive instincts against stronger competition; a strong weekend at the Buffalo Prospects Showcase could influence how Boston views his development, even though it won’t guarantee a NHL roster spot.
Boston acquired forward JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth in a draft-night deal that sent the Bruins’ 2026 first-round pick (23rd overall) and Florida’s 2028 first-round selection to Utah. The 24-year-old, known for an elite shot and positional versatility (can play both wings and contribute on the power play and at 5-on-5), is expected to bolster Boston’s offense and could pair with David Pastrnak as part of a rising Bruins core alongside Lukas Reichel; his German national-team ties and Karl Sturm/McIlvane connections figure into the move as Boston looks to a fresh start and higher ceiling.
JJ Peterka was traded from the Utah Mammoth to the Boston Bruins for the No. 23 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a conditional first-round pick in 2028; Utah then moved the 23rd pick to Detroit for goaltender Sebastian Cossa. Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong said the move creates room for younger players and adds future flexibility, while Bruins GM Don Sweeney said Peterka's speed, elite shot and versatility will bolster the lineup. Peterka, 24, had 47 points (25 goals, 22 assists) in 82 games this season and has four seasons left on a $38.5 million contract. Cossa posted strong AHL numbers and could become an RFA on July 1.
Boston acquires forward JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth in exchange for the Bruins’ 2026 first-round pick (23rd overall) and Florida’s 2028 first-round pick, with a potential swap to Boston’s unprotected 2029 first-round pick if Florida’s 2028 pick lands in the top 10. Peterka, 24, played 82 games for Utah in 2025-26 with 25 goals and 22 assists, and has career highs of 68 points (Buffalo, 2024-25) and 50 points (2023-24). The Boston Bruins are reportedly nearing a draft-night trade to acquire winger JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth, with Boston sending Utah its 2026 first-round pick (23rd overall) and a 2028 first-round pick. Peterka, who spent last season in Utah after a stint with the Sabres, could bolster Boston’s top-six and reconnect with playmakers like Pastrnak, marking a potential major upgrade despite past limited minutes in Utah.
Boston went into the NHL Draft Lottery with a 58.1% chance to land Toronto’s 2026 first-round pick, but the Maple Leafs won and retained the pick, denying the Bruins a top-10 selection. The likely payout for Boston is Toronto’s unprotected 2028 first-round pick (barring any 2027-pick top-10 twists), a long-term asset rather than immediate help as the Bruins navigate their core’s prime years.
After a 100-point season ended by a first-round loss to Buffalo, Boston must add a top-line forward, shore up the defense, and free cap space (exploring trades like Robert Thomas) while considering leadership moves as Swayman anchors the lineup.
Toronto earned the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL Draft lottery, while Boston’s chance at Toronto’s top-five-protected first-round pick from the 2025 Brandon Carlo deal remains out of reach as the draft moves to June in Buffalo.
Breakup day showed Boston navigating a captainless season with Pastrnak, McAvoy and Lindholm serving as leaders; the team is weighing whether to appoint a captain, has over $16 million in cap space to keep Viktor Arvidsson and Andrew Peeke, and must decide on potential upgrades while McAvoy faces an in-person hearing for a discipline incident. James Hagens heads to Worlds to build pro experience, and Boston is looking to build on its playoff push with a deeper pipeline and possible top-6/7 draft picks this summer.
Buffalo’s Alex Lyon stopped 25 shots as the Sabres defeated the Bruins 4-1 in Game 6 at TD Garden to clinch the series, Buffalo’s first playoff-series win since 2007. Tuch and Samuelsson opened the scoring, Benson added a late goal, and Norris iced it with an empty-netter; Buffalo will face the Montreal-Tampa Bay winner in Round 2 with home-ice advantage.
The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Boston Bruins 4-1 in Game 6 to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, their first series win since 2007; they’ll host the Montreal-Tampa Bay winner in Round 2, with Round 2 tickets going on sale to season-ticket members first and to the public later.
Boston was routed 6-1 by Buffalo in Game 4, falling behind 3-1 in the series as starting goalie Jeremy Swayman was pulled after yielding six goals on 29 shots and was seen shouting at teammates from the bench; Joonas Korpisalo stopped all six shots in relief. The loss caps Boston's worst home playoff stretch in decades and leaves the Bruins facing a steep uphill climb to extend the series.
Boston rode Viktor Arvidsson’s two goals and a strong performance by goalie Jeremy Swayman to a 4-2 win over Buffalo, tying the first-round series at 1-1 as Pavel Zacha and Morgan Geekie also scored and the Sabres’ 0-for-5 power play continued to struggle ahead of Game 3 in Boston.
At a sold-out KeyBank Center, Buffalo erased an early 2-0 deficit to beat Boston 4-3 in Game 1, sparked by Tage Thompson’s late tying goal and Samuelsson’s go-ahead strike, with Tuch adding an empty-netter as the raucous home crowd carried the energy into a hockey-town storyline heading into Game 2.
