Carbs, Cash, and Crazy Speed: 2026 Tour de France Sets a New Pace

The 2026 Tour de France was the fastest in history, averaging 43.328 kph, with a record-setting Alpe d’Huez ascent and eight stages above 45 kph. Nutrition played a key role as riders pushed carbohydrate intake beyond the once-accepted 120 g/hour, with some days reaching 140–160 g/hour (560–640 calories) to aid recovery, despite ongoing debates about gut tolerance. A new wave of wealthy, well-staffed teams—Lidl-Trek, Decathlon-CMA CGM, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, and UAE Emirates-XRG—intensified competition and tempo, aided by heat training and other tech. Analysts say fueling and performance staff will continue to push speeds higher, with the guess that the record could be broken again next year.

Therefore, the researchers recommend that neither of these diets be used in the long term.
