Enigmatic Plasma Waves and Mystical Magnetosphere: Unveiling Mercury's Secrets
Scientists have detected "singing" plasma waves, known as chorus waves, around Mercury, a planet with a weak magnetic field and minimal atmosphere. These waves are typically found around planets with thick atmospheres and permanent radiation belts. The discovery provides insights into the magnetic environment around Mercury and the shaping of planetary magnetic fields by the solar wind. The observations were made by the MIO instrument as part of the Mercury BepiColombo mission, and further investigations are planned for 2025.
