
"Testing the Quark Picture: A Physics Experiment"
A measurement of the charge radius of an aluminum nucleus has implications for the existence of a fourth family of quarks. The standard model of particle physics assumes three families of quarks, but the possibility of a fourth family has not been completely ruled out. The charge radius of the isomer state of aluminum-26 (26mAl) was measured using two different experiments, resulting in a value higher than previously reported. This new measurement affects the unitarity test of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, which describes quark oscillations. While the shift is not conclusive, further exploration of different observables is needed to determine the existence of a fourth family of quarks.
