Dust Analysis Suggests Youthful Age for Saturn's Rings

New evidence suggests that Saturn's rings are no more than 400 million years old, and potentially less than 100 million years old. The rings are very thin, spread out over a large surface area, and almost entirely made up of pure water ice. The age estimate is based on the rate at which the rings have been bombarded by interplanetary dust, as measured by the Cosmic Dust Analyzer on board the Cassini spacecraft. A young set of rings around Saturn means that they wouldn't have formed with the planet, but rather from a catastrophic event such as the shattering of an ice-rich moon.

Saturn's Rings Found to be Surprisingly Young in New Study

Saturn's rings are much younger than the planet itself at around 400 million years old, according to a study by the University of Colorado at Boulder. The research team analyzed dust accumulation on the rings using data from the Cosmic Dust Analyzer aboard NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, concluding that the rings have been gathering dust for only a few hundred million years. However, the origin of Saturn’s rings remains unknown, and previous research suggests they might be gradually vanishing due to ice raining down onto the planet.

Saturn's Rings: A Recent and Surprising Discovery

Saturn's iconic rings are much younger than previously thought, with new research indicating they are only 400 million years old, less than a tenth of the planet's age. The University of Colorado Boulder team used the Cosmic Dust Analyzer aboard Nasa's Cassini spacecraft to study the accumulation of dust on the rings, which they say is only a few hundred million years old. The discovery does not solve the mystery of how the rings formed, however.
