Russian satellite Cosmos 2612 maneuvered to within 500 meters of the US-registered ICEYE-X36, a commercial radar asset supporting Ukraine. Analysts warn the move risks collision or interference, highlighting vulnerabilities in Western space infrastructure.
Russian satellite Cosmos 2612 has maneuvered to within 1.5 kilometers of the U.S.-registered ICEYE-X36 radar satellite, a distance analysts describe as unusually close and potentially hostile. The approach follows a series of fuel-intensive orbital adjustments that aligned the two spacecraft in the same plane. While the Defense Department has not commented, experts warn that such proximity raises the risk of a counterspace weapon deployment or collision, particularly given the target satellite’s role in providing intelligence to Ukraine.
