Russian Satellite Closes to 1.5 km from U.S.-Owned Radar Asset Supporting Ukraine

Russian satellite Cosmos 2612 has maneuvered to within 1.5 kilometers of the U.S.-registered ICEYE-X36 radar satellite, a distance analysts describe as unusually close and potentially hostile. The approach follows a series of fuel-intensive orbital adjustments that aligned the two spacecraft in the same plane. While the Defense Department has not commented, experts warn that such proximity raises the risk of a counterspace weapon deployment or collision, particularly given the target satellite’s role in providing intelligence to Ukraine.
