Gaet’ale Pond: life persists in Earth’s hottest, saltiest pool
Gaet’ale Pond in Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression holds a record salinity of 433 g/kg (about 43% by weight) and sits at roughly 50–55 C, with a calcium- and magnesium-chloride brine and no inflow or outflow. The extreme conditions have made the site a key natural lab for habitability research, and while some nearby pools may be sterile, Gaet’ale hosts bacteria according to a 2021 metagenomic study, highlighting that life can endure in environments far harsher than the ocean—and informing astrobiology analogs for Mars and Titan.
