West Omaha man dies after high-speed chase and three-hour standoff
Daniel Read, 44, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a high-speed chase and three-hour standoff with Omaha police in West Omaha. Read, who had an outstanding felony warrant, forced his way into a home near 144th and Shirley Street, threatening the homeowner with a firearm before she escaped. Police deployed SWAT and crisis negotiators, exchanging text messages with Read for approximately three hours. No officers fired their weapons, and no one else was injured. The case is being investigated as an in-custody death, and a grand jury will review the incident under Nebraska law.
