JWST captures first images of distant asteroid belts.
The James Webb Space Telescope has captured images of the Fomalhaut system, revealing three debris fields surrounding the star, including an inner asteroid belt that is 10 times broader than expected, a tilted belt that could be the result of undiscovered planets, and an outer debris ring similar to our solar system’s Kuiper belt. Scientists suspect there may be three or more planets about the size of Uranus and Neptune orbiting Fomalhaut, and are analyzing JWST images to confirm their existence.
