Narwhal-shaped light waves push light confinement beyond diffraction in dielectrics
Physicists at Peking University report narwhal-shaped electromagnetic eigenmodes that concentrate light far below the diffraction limit in lossless dielectric materials, achieving an ultrasmall mode volume (~5×10^-7 λ^3), demonstrating 3D confinement and a near-field microscope with λ/1000 resolution, and introducing singulonics as a framework for ultra-efficient photonics and high-resolution imaging.
