Unveiling the Mysteries of Supernova Remnant 1E 0102.2–7219

Astronomers have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study the properties of the supernova remnant 1E 0102.2–7219 (E0102). The observations revealed that E0102 has a ring morphology with a mean radius of about 20.2 light years and a bridge-like structure. The remnant shows polarized regions in its shell, and the mean fractional polarization was measured to be 7% and 12% for 5,500 and 9,000 MHz, respectively. The study concluded that the properties of E0102 are consistent with that of a typical young supernova remnant.
