
Michigan’s Tornado Toll Since 2000: A Persistent Weather Hazard
An NOAA/NCEI review shows at least seven tornadoes have caused 10 Michigan deaths since 2000, with Friday’s storms adding four more in southwest Michigan. Notable cases include the 2022 Gaylord EF3, the 2023 I‑96/Williamston–Webberville EF2, the 2007 Kalkaska EF2 fatality, the 2008 Needmore EF1 fatality, the 2010 Thornton EF1, the 2024 Plymouth EF1, and a 2013 cleanup-related death in the Fenton–Holly outbreak, illustrating Michigan’s recurring tornado risk across years.
