UN Report Declares 1.5°C Target Lost, Demands 18% Emission Cut by 2030

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has declared that the 1.5°C warming limit is no longer achievable, marking a shift to a strategy focused on minimizing overshoot. The 2026 Emissions Gap Report, titled 'The Point of Return,' states that global temperatures will inevitably exceed 1.5°C, with the new goal being to limit peak warming to 1.7-1.8°C and return to 1.5°C by 2100. This requires drastic emission cuts of 18% by 2030 and 45% by 2035, far exceeding current national pledges. The report highlights that the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement has worsened projections, adding 0.1°C to expected warming. While renewable energy growth has outpaced expectations, current policies are insufficient to prevent severe climate impacts, necessitating massive scaling of carbon removal technologies and fossil fuel phase-outs.
