DOJ Finds Berkeley Law Violated Civil Rights Act via Race-Conscious Admissions
The Department of Justice and Department of Education concluded that UC Berkeley School of Law violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by favoring Black applicants over White and Asian peers. The agencies cited data showing Black applicants had 5.8 times higher odds of admission in 2025 and median LSAT scores approximately five points lower than their White and Asian counterparts. Berkeley Law denies the allegations, stating it complies with Proposition 209 and federal law by not considering race, while the DOJ seeks a voluntary compliance agreement.
