Spain tightens cross-border checks as migration row with Italy deepens
Spain will reinstate random border checks on travelers arriving from Italy at ports and airports from midnight, widening the rift with Giorgia Meloni after Rome imposed similar controls in response to the Ceuta migrant influx. The measures run until Sept. 7 and come as the European Commission says it has not been notified of temporary border controls and cautions against undermining Schengen. The Ceuta crisis saw about 72,000 migrants and at least 82 deaths, highlighting deep EU divisions over migration.
