European equity futures edged higher after the S&P 500 closed at a new record high, surpassing 5,000 for the first time, amid optimism over eventual Federal Reserve interest-rate cuts. Trading in Asia was muted due to Lunar New Year closures, while contracts for the Euro Stoxx 50 indicate a potential extension of its recent gains.
Asian shares were subdued due to concerns over the US economy and troubles at First Republic Bank. Euro Stoxx 50 futures slid 0.3%, while Nasdaq futures gained 0.6% after Facebook owner Meta soared 12% with its earnings beat. Nomura shares fell more than 7% after posting a sharp fall in quarterly net profit. The S&P 500 and the Dow were pulled lower by weakness in economically sensitive sectors, hinting at mounting recession jitters. The euro edged 0.1% higher to $1.1054, moving closer to its highest level in over a year of $1.1095 hit just a day ago.
