Advancements in Artillery: Industry and Army Achieve Record-breaking Range with New Projectile

Boeing and Norway's Nammo have developed a 155mm ramjet-powered artillery shell as part of the US Army's Extended Range Artillery Munitions Suite (ERAMS) program. The recent test of the shell broke the existing range record for a ramjet-powered round, although the exact distance is unknown. The goal is for the shell to hit targets over 70 kilometers away, with the potential to reach 150 kilometers. The ramjet engine allows for sustained supersonic flight and increased range. Other companies, including Raytheon and BAE Systems, are also working on advanced 155mm rounds as part of the ERAMS program. The US Army is exploring options to extend the range of its artillery units, including the development of new ground-based missiles and drones.
