Holiday Season Sees Falling Prices and Cheaper Consumer Goods
Prices for certain physical goods in the US are falling this holiday season, providing relief to consumers who have experienced rapid inflation over the past two years. Toys are almost 3% cheaper, sports equipment is down nearly 2%, and bigger-ticket items like washing machines cost 12% less compared to last year. Eggs, which saw a significant price increase last winter, are down 22% over the past year. While overall consumer prices are still rising, the moderation in goods prices is seen as a positive step towards easing high inflation. Economists expect prices for physical products to continue falling next year, particularly for longer-lasting manufactured goods. The decline in prices could provide a psychological lift to consumers and help ease inflation concerns.
