DOE Declares 4-Day Grid Emergency in PJM Region Amid Unseasonable Heat
The U.S. Department of Energy has issued a four-day emergency order for the PJM Interconnection grid, covering 13 states and Washington, D.C., to prevent potential blackouts. The directive, effective from October 13 to October 16, allows power plants to exceed pollution limits and run backup generators longer. This move responds to unseasonably warm October temperatures and scheduled maintenance, which have strained the grid serving approximately 67 million people. Officials describe the action as a precaution, noting that widespread outages are not currently anticipated.
