Unveiling the Intricate Brain: Mapping Development, Speech, and Cellular Landscape

Researchers have constructed an atlas of healthy fetal brain maturation using ultrasound data collected from the Fetal Growth Longitudinal Study (FGLS) of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project. The atlas provides a four-dimensional representation of the developing fetal brain from 14 to 31 weeks of gestation. The study reveals the spatiotemporal patterns of brain development, including cortical folding, volumetric growth, and the emergence of specific brain structures. The atlas also demonstrates the normal variability in fetal brain maturation associated with satisfactory postnatal growth and neurodevelopment up to 2 years of age. The findings contribute to the understanding of normal fetal brain development and can serve as a reference for assessing deviations from the norm.
