A CNET reporter tours Samsung Display’s highly secure lab, where Flex Titanium—a thinner titanium‑alloy film and plate—will underpin future Galaxy foldables like the Z Fold 8, designed to reduce the visible crease and boost durability; panels are subjected to up to 500,000 folds and extreme temperatures to test reliability ahead of Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event.
Apple treats foldables as a materials problem, focusing on how the display's adhesive layers and layered stack handle stress to reduce creases rather than relying solely on hinge design; TrendForce-backed analysis notes that smarter OCAs and material strategies like variable-thickness glass aim to improve long-term panel durability.
Samsung Display unveiled a crease-free OLED panel for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, using a metal reinforcing plate and a redesigned OCA layer to boost rigidity and reduce wrinkles. Apple reportedly plans a different reinforcement path, using glass as the structural support for its foldable iPhone, indicating distinct engineering approaches. Both devices are expected in the second half of 2026, with Samsung potentially launching first.
Samsung teases new generation of products including inward and outward folding displays and monitor-sized folding and sliding OLEDs ahead of its CES 2024 press conference, showcasing the "In&Out Flip" technology that aims to provide a new alternative for consumers who prefer bar-shaped smartphones, while also testing the devices in extreme conditions. Additionally, the company is displaying rollable and hybrid displays, along with an earbud case with a built-in display, hinting at potential future innovations in the tech market.
Samsung Display is reportedly reorganizing its business team to become Apple's primary supplier for foldable and next-gen XR devices. While Apple has yet to release any foldable devices, Samsung Display believes this is the future and wants to be prepared. The company is focusing on developing display technologies that meet Apple's demand and standards. Additionally, Samsung Display intends to enter Apple's supply chain for XR headsets, currently supplied by Sony, by developing OLEDoS technology. Samsung's mobile division is also developing its own XR headset, potentially competing with Apple's upcoming Vision Pro headset.
