Iowa State Reimagines Women's Sports by Replacing Gymnastics

Iowa State University will discontinue its women’s gymnastics program and replace it with another sport to provide equal or greater participation opportunities for women. Gymnasts can finish their degrees with scholarships honored and continue to access athletics services, or transfer to other schools. Incoming recruits will have scholarships honored, and gymnastics coaches won’t have renewed contracts. The department will spend months researching a new women’s sport to add and may pursue NCAA waivers for an extra year of competition for affected athletes.

ISU Gymnastics announced the Feb. 6 meet against West Virginia has been canceled because there aren’t enough student-athletes to safely field a team. The Cyclones’ next competition is Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. against Western Michigan in Hilton Coliseum during ISU’s Beauty and the Beast event, which also features West Virginia in the wrestling portion.
