Unmasking the Postwar Dream: Harvard Photographs Reconsider 1950s America
Harvard Art Museums’ The Way We Never Were draws from the American Professional Photographers Collection (about 70 images) to question the rosy postwar narrative, showing polished, middle‑class scenes that mask racial segregation, Cold War anxiety, and rigid gender roles. The exhibit invites visitors to critically examine how commercial photography helped construct an idealized vision of American life, spanning weddings to homecomings across the U.S., and runs at the University Research Gallery in Cambridge through May 9, 2027.
