HSAs adopt a 401(k) playbook to boost savings uptake
Employers are applying a 401(k)-style playbook to health savings accounts (HSAs): auto-enroll workers in HSAs paired with high-deductible health plans, offer employer contributions, and even tap 401(k)-style matches to boost participation. In 2025 roughly 46% of employers auto-enrolled HDHP participants into HSAs, and about 77% provided employer contributions; HDHP/HSA offerings are rising (31% of employers in 2025, up from 4% in 2005). 2026 contribution limits are $4,400 self-only and $8,750 family; about 10% of contributing employers also offer a match, with another 7.5% considering it.
