Rubio becomes second person in U.S. history to hold State and National Security Adviser roles simultaneously
President Donald Trump has formally appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as his permanent national security adviser, a move confirmed by White House officials. This appointment makes Rubio the second individual in U.S. history to hold both positions concurrently, following Henry Kissinger under President Richard Nixon. Rubio had served in the role on an interim basis since May 2025, replacing Michael Waltz. The decision consolidates significant foreign policy and security authority in one official, a structure that has drawn both praise for efficiency and criticism regarding the concentration of power.
