Rotta the Hutt: ILM’s Bold Redesign for The Mandalorian and Grogu
ILM redesigned Rotta the Hutt for The Mandalorian and Grogu, evolving from a more intimidating look to a heavier, more relatable Hutt. Lead modeler Masa Narita built the digital Rotta, with facial animation and muscle-fat-skin simulations to sell weight. The team used elephant-seal movement for his walk and created a distinct 'Rotta Roll' attack to set him apart. On-set, Rotta was portrayed by Richard Cetrone while Jeremy Allen White voiced him, with Meg Grube shaping his expressions to convey emotion, including a pivotal beach moment with Grogu that became the film’s heart.
