Roman Paris Emerges Under Notre Dame in Monumental Dig
Archaeologists digging beneath Notre Dame’s forecourt in Paris have reached the fourth-century Roman layer of Lutetia, unearthing a Constantine coin, medieval pottery with mysterious red inscriptions, and other artifacts as part of preparations for a new shaded public square; the find, already nicknamed the 'dig of the century,' offers a rare record of Paris’s deep history and may lead to digging deeper toward Gaul and earlier eras.
