Amazon's Leo internet service moves toward first rollout as satellite fleet nears 400

Amazon says its Leo broadband satellite network is on track to begin initial internet service later this year after boosting the constellation beyond 390 satellites (roughly 394 in orbit of 398 launched since April 2025), with more than 3,200 satellites planned overall. The rollout is expected to start near Earth’s poles and expand inward as more satellites join, targeting consumers with ground terminals as well as governments and airlines. The company, which has roughly 100 launches booked to build the network, has relied on ULA’s Atlas V for now while Blue Origin’s New Glenn and ULA’s Vulcan face launch issues and repairs. Amazon aims for a mid-2026 service start, positioning Leo as a rival to SpaceX’s Starlink.

An algae bloom turned the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool green shortly after Trump’s refurbishment, sparking a wave of memes—from Star Wars parodies to Bob Ross scenes—across social media; Trump blamed vandalism for the discoloration, authorities reported six arrests, and internal records reportedly undermine that narrative as online chatter continues to swirl.

Reddit co-founder foresees an internet expanding beyond screens with voice interfaces

Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman says the internet will expand beyond traditional screens, with voice and audio interfaces possibly becoming the primary way we interact with computers; keyboards and mice won’t disappear, but we’ll see more listening and voice-enabled experiences as people stay connected over shared interests. Reddit’s long-term goal is to reach 1 billion users, a topic Huffman touched on during Cannes Lions, noting that while voice UI isn’t being actively built yet, it’s on the team’s radar as part of the internet’s evolution.

The Audio Internet: Reddit’s Huffman bets on a voice-first future

Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman says the next major shift on the internet could be a move toward voice- and audio-centered interfaces, letting people talk to computers and experience apps like Reddit through audio. He notes that while input devices like the mouse and keyboard aren’t going away, there will be more “ears and watches” in our computing lives, expanding how we connect with others over shared interests as Reddit aims to scale toward 1 billion users.

Starlink Expands Beyond Internet to Global Monitoring and Enforcement

Starlink’s low-latency, near-Earth satellite network is delivering far more than fast internet, with the constellation aiding global law enforcement in cracking scams, linking detection gear for wildfire and rainforest monitoring in remote regions, and enabling conservation efforts—while the company trimmed its fleet after a near-collision with China.

Bots Now Account for Majority of Web Traffic, Cloudflare Data Reveal

Cloudflare data show AI agents and bots now generate 57.4% of web requests, surpassing human traffic at 42.6%, signaling a rapid surge in autonomous browsing. The rise—driven by AI agents using tools with little human input—could reshape the internet’s business model since bots don’t click ads, prompting new monetization ideas and raising questions about how content is discovered and consumed in the web’s evolving landscape.

From 4chan legend to big-screen dread: the Backrooms go cinematic

Originating from a 2019 4chan post, the internet-born Backrooms have leaped into cinema as an A24 feature directed by Kane Parsons (Kane Pixels). The film, set in the 1990s, expands the Backrooms’ eerie noclip lore into a narrative about a man who discovers a seam in a basement wall and steps into an endless, unnavigable labyrinth, illustrating how online creepypasta and liminal-space culture helped spawn a modern horror icon.

Partial Internet Return Reveals Tehran's Power Struggle

Iran has partially restored international internet access after a nearly three-month blackout, triggering a public clash within the ruling elite as hardliners challenge President Masoud Pezeshkian’s administration over who controls internet governance. A newly formed “special headquarters” to manage reconnection faces legal pushback from conservative factions, while NetBlocks reports ongoing heavy filtering and about 60% of normal connectivity. Iran’s internet flickers back to life as citizens balance caution with protest

Iranians greeted partial internet restoration after an 88‑day nationwide blackout imposed by authorities, with many users still needing VPNs to bypass active filtering. While some posted selfies and messages of defiance, others expressed frustration that access remains limited and not fully open. NetBlocks described the move as the longest modern‑history shutdown, and observers say the government’s centralized control over internet governance complicates the reopening. The situation signals a potential shift, but widespread connectivity and unrestricted access remain uncertain.

Iran weighs a China-style internet: tighter control, not a total blackout

Iran may be moving from episodic internet shutdowns toward a durable, China-style system of digital control that centralizes censorship, monitors communications, and isolates citizens from the outside world while keeping some commerce online. While officials cite imported Chinese equipment as a sign of a “permanent” shutdown, experts caution Iran lacks many domestic capabilities and may pursue an adaptive, centralized internet that tightens restrictions during sensitive moments and eases them for economic needs rather than a full, permanent disconnection.
