AI designs ultracompact photonic components 500x smaller than engineers imagined

AI-driven inverse design shrank three photonic-chip components—mirrors, a wavelength splitter and a spatial mode sorter—by up to 500×, producing devices about 11 μm long for mirrors and ~5 μm for the splitter, made from silicon nitride (400–800 nm thick). The AI-optimized designs deliver strong light confinement and up to 98.5% reflectivity, demonstrating manufacturable, compact components that could boost on-chip performance for fiber-optic communications, data centers, AI, LiDAR and quantum computing.

"Advancements in Ultra-flat Optics for Broadband Thermal Imaging"

A multi-institutional research team, led by the University of Washington, has developed ultra-thin meta-optics for broadband thermal imaging, addressing the need for lighter and thinner imaging systems with uncompromising image quality. Leveraging a new design framework called "MTF-engineering," which incorporates artificial intelligence and a figure of merit, the team demonstrated thermal imaging with meta-optics in both laboratory and real-world settings. The research represents a significant step toward achieving imaging quality comparable to commercial refractive lens systems, and the team has made their framework available for use in designing meta-optics.
