Islanders fundraiser for convicted cop sparks backlash
The New York Islanders faced backlash after hosting a fundraiser tied to a season-finale 50/50 raffle that benefited Erik Duran, a former NYPD sergeant convicted of manslaughter in the Bronx. The raffle raised about $44,890, and civil rights groups criticized the team’s decision to support Duran’s legal defense as he appeals a 3- to 9-year sentence. The Islanders declined to comment.
