Sensory sensitivity tied to perception, not sharper senses, new study finds

A study of 150 young women found that sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) does not confer sharper hearing, vision, smell, or other senses. Objective lab tests showed no consistent evidence of heightened sensory thresholds, and associations with sensitivity weakened after accounting for neuroticism and extraversion. The findings suggest SPS reflects how people experience and interpret sensory input rather than true sensory acuity, though limitations include the female, young sample and a single-time measurement.

Revolutionary Saliva Substitute Offers Lasting Relief for Dry Mouth

Scientists at the University of Leeds have developed a novel saliva substitute that is four to five times more effective than existing products for relieving dry mouth conditions. The substitute, made of a microgel and a polysaccharide-based hydrogel, binds to the surface of the mouth and hydrates it, providing longer-lasting relief. Laboratory tests showed that the new substance had significantly lower desorption rates compared to commercially available products. The researchers believe that the results will be replicated in human trials and are looking to translate the technology into commercially available products to improve the quality of life for those with dry mouth conditions.
