India's Reluctance at COP28: Skipped Climate Declarations Raise Concerns
Heatwaves caused by climate change are not only a threat to human health but also have significant economic consequences. Excess heat exacerbates existing medical conditions and can lead to dehydration and organ failure. Heatwaves kill more people each year than any other natural disaster. A recent study estimated that high temperatures led to 490 billion lost hours of labor in 2022, resulting in a $863 billion reduction in global GDP. Agriculture, particularly in poorer regions, is the most affected sector. Heat-related labor loss is expected to increase by 50% if global temperatures rise to just under 2°C. Climate change also worsens health by spreading diseases and increasing healthcare costs.
