Unraveling the Dark Twists and Witches in Apple TV's 'The Changeling'

"The Changeling" on Apple TV+ is a TV series adaptation of Victor LaValle's novel, featuring LaKeith Stanfield as a father who dismisses his wife's suspicions that their baby is not their own. While the show has appealing performers and some visual style, it struggles to capture the dark and despairing tone of the book. The storytelling is fragmented with excessive flashbacks, and the expansion of certain characters' roles feels forced. However, there are moments of fairy tale magic and a gratifying focus on books throughout the series.

"The Changeling: A Nightmarish and Pretentious Thriller That Misses the Mark"

Apple TV+'s adaptation of Victor LaValle's novel "The Changeling" fails to effectively bring together the elements of Norwegian fairy tales, the Black American experience, Ugandan traditions, and magical folklore. The series, told from the perspective of protagonist Apollo Kagwa (played by LaKeith Stanfield), struggles to ground the narrative in themes of memory, parenthood, and childhood. With an overwhelming amount of exposition and a lack of explanation, the show leaves viewers with more questions than answers, resulting in a baffling and disjointed viewing experience.
