Diamondbacks DFA Gurriel Jr. Amid Poor 2026 Performance and Injury Struggles

The Arizona Diamondbacks designated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment on September 13, 2026, effectively ending his tenure with the club. Gurriel’s 2026 season was hampered by a premature return from a torn ACL, resulting in a .210/.254/.290 slash line and two additional injuries. The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for infielder Jose Fernandez. Gurriel is expected to clear waivers and be released, as no team is likely to assume his contract obligations for the remainder of the season.

Gurriel Jr. Returns to Diamondbacks, Baker DFA’d to Make Room

Arizona reinstated Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the 10-day IL after his ACL tear, making room by DFA’ing first baseman Luken Baker. Gurriel could be back in the lineup as soon as this weekend after a rapid rehab, while Baker, who had limited MLB action since April 7, may clear waivers and elect free agency if outrighted. The first-base/DH situation has been in flux due to Santana and Smith injuries, with Jose Fernandez and Ildemaro Vargas contributing as options.

Gurriel Jr. Poised for Diamondbacks Return Against Blue Jays

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. could rejoin the Diamondbacks this weekend after tearing his ACL last Sept., with manager Torey Lovullo signaling a near return. He’s been ramping up in Arizona, walking and doubling in four plate appearances with Double-A Amarillo and then homering in the next game, suggesting a quicker-than-expected recovery that could see him in the outfield (not just as DH) as the team weighs his workload, potentially for a weekend matchup against his former team, the Blue Jays.

"Revisiting Varsho Trade as Diamondbacks Face Blue Jays in Toronto"

As the Arizona Diamondbacks prepare to face the Toronto Blue Jays in their first series after the All-Star break, the trade that sent Daulton Varsho to Toronto is being evaluated. So far, the Diamondbacks have come out ahead in terms of wins above replacement value (WAR), with Varsho's defensive contributions and Moreno's potential as a catcher being key factors. However, Gurriel has been the standout offensive player in the trade, making his first All-Star Game appearance. The two teams have similar records, and Varsho will face his former team for the first time in the upcoming series.
