James Webb Telescope Uncovers Universe's Oldest Galaxies at Record Distances
Two papers released on Tuesday confirm that the Webb Space Telescope has imaged four early galaxies that date back to just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. The galaxies are relatively small and are forming stars at a rapid pace, with half of the stars in them being less than 70 million years old. The galaxies also lack most of the heavier elements seen in today's Universe, which is consistent with what we'd expect from the earliest galaxies in the Universe.
