Madison Officer Identified in Fatal July Shooting of Corey Ruiz
State officials named Kiel Baitinger-Peterson as the Madison police officer who fatally shot 38-year-old Corey Ruiz during an attempted arrest on July 22 after Ruiz allegedly injured an officer with a knife; four officers were involved, with two restraining Ruiz and a stun-gun attempt that failed, and bystander footage amid protests prompted an encampment that was cleared later. The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating and all officers are on administrative leave, with Ruiz’s family represented by Ben Crump.
