
IBM Debuts Dual-ISA Mainframe Core to Run Z and Arm Apps on One Chip
IBM unveiled a next-generation Z chip with a native dual-ISA core that can execute Z and Arm software on the same silicon, featuring 11 Z cores at over 5.7 GHz on a 2nm process, large caches (36 MB L2, 432 MB L3, and L4 up to 3.5 GB), and on-chip accelerators plus a DPU for I/O, AI, crypto, and more. The design supports running Linux workloads via KVM/OpenShift beside Z workloads, enabling Arm software to run adjacent to traditional mainframe tasks; tape-out is underway, with commercial availability expected years down the line, and no immediate OS expansion beyond Arm and Z planned yet.
