
Rivers Bend Before Leaves: New Study Rewrites Meander Origins
Stanford researchers contest the idea that land plants are required for river meanders, showing barren rivers can form curved channels as well. By analyzing over 4,400 bends in 49 modern rivers (vegetated and unvegetated), they find plants shift the direction of sediment deposition and slow lateral meander growth, but are not necessary for curves to emerge. The work suggests ancient rocks may overstate how rare meanders were before vegetation and is supported by evidence of deep, high-sinuosity rivers without roots in the 1.2‑billion-year Stoer Group. These findings refine how geologists read paleoenvironments, affect interpretations of Martian channels, and remind that vegetation still influences river dynamics and floodplain carbon storage.
