MicroRNA-132, a small molecule that regulates gene expression, may play a significant role in Alzheimer's disease by impacting both neurons and microglia, the brain's immune cells. Alzheimer's patients often exhibit disrupted and altered microRNA profiles, particularly a significant decrease in microRNA-132. Researchers found that increasing microRNA-132 in microglia shifted them from a disease-associated to a more balanced homeostatic state, potentially opening a new avenue in the understanding and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
