MLB Pitches 154-Game Season and Expanded Playoffs to Win Salary Cap Approval

Major League Baseball has proposed reducing the regular season to 154 games and expanding the Division Series to a best-of-seven format, effective in 2029. These changes are part of a broader collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiation with the MLB Players Association (MLBPA), which expires on December 1. The league asserts that a shorter season and expanded playoffs will boost national broadcast revenue and player health, but the MLBPA maintains that all proposals are contingent on the adoption of a salary cap, a system the union strongly opposes.
