Astros Add Infield Depth by Acquiring Braden Shewmake in Yankees Swap
The Yankees traded infielder Braden Shewmake to the Astros for right-hander Wilmy Sanchez. Houston also placed Joey Loperfido on the injured list and recalled Jayden Murray, returning to a 13-man pitching staff. Shewmake provides infield depth for an Astros club missing multiple shortstops as Jeremy Peña and Nick Allen deal with injuries. He posted an 82 wRC+ in 72 Triple-A games last season and went 1-for-10 in 2026 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Sanchez, a reliever who has climbed Houston’s ladder, has moved from starter to bullpen with improving results; he logged a 3.50 ERA across 54 innings in the minors in earlier seasons and has allowed just one run over seven innings in five Double-A outings this year.
