Ancient Ohio Rock Tracks Remain a Mystery of Origin

A massive sandstone boulder on a wooded Ohio hill known as the Barnesville Petroglyph bears more than 100 carvings—including bear, deer and human tracks, serpents, spirals, and carved faces—whose creators and purpose are still debated. While some early experts tied the carvings to the Adena, comparisons with sites in Pennsylvania and West Virginia link them to the Monongahela culture (around AD 1200) with possible Ojibwe influence; no consensus exists. Many carvings were painted or damaged after 1984, and several stones were stolen or disappeared, leaving fewer than 70 carvings visible today. The site remains an enigmatic Indigenous landmark accessible to visitors with a call to preserve it.
