Wind-Sculpted Steel: How Monsoons Forged Sri Lanka’s Legendary Wootz
Ancient Sri Lankans forged the renowned high‑carbon Wootz steel centuries before Damascus blades by smelting iron in hilltop forges that used the power of the monsoons. Archaeologist Gill Juleff showed the furnaces faced the wind and worked like wind‑driven flutes, creating a Bernoulli effect that produced blooms of iron and rich, patterned steel. Originating in the Indian subcontinent and fading after a 12th‑century invasion cut off trade, the technique was reverse‑engineered from these hilltop forges, revealing why Wootz steel was so prized.
