
Record-setting Yosemite climber dies in Sierra Nevada accident
Jake Whisenant, a 30-year-old Mammoth Lakes climber famed for speed ascents on Yosemite's El Capitan, died Aug. 3 in a Sierra Nevada accident. Whisenant had gained national attention for a record-setting El Capitan ascent in 2 hours, 55 minutes, 32 seconds and had also completed the Nose twice in one day. Officials have released few details about the fatal incident, and the climbing community mourns the loss of a prominent young climber.
