Impending Supernova Threatens Earth's Nearest Stars and Half of Oz
Astronomers have identified several stars near Earth that could potentially go into supernova, including Betelgeuse, IK Pegasi, Spica, Alpha Luci, and Antares. While Betelgeuse is the closest and could explode sooner than initially thought, it is far enough away to not harm Earth. The other stars are located at varying distances and timeframes for potential supernova events, with Spica having the potential to cause significant damage to Earth's ozone layer if it were to explode within 160 light-years.
