A study led by the University of Oxford has investigated the absence of animal fossils in rocks from the early Neoproterozoic era, shedding light on the evolution of animals. The researchers found that certain Cambrian mudstone deposits with exceptional preservation conditions contained antibacterial clays that prevented the breakdown of organic materials. However, similar deposits from the early Neoproterozoic era did not contain animal fossils, suggesting that animals had not yet evolved during that time. The study suggests a possible maximum age for the origin of animals of around 789 million years and calls for further research to confirm the absence of animals in progressively younger Neoproterozoic deposits.
