Queen Camilla Presents Roo Replica to NYPL, Rekindling Pooh’s Heritage

During her U.S. visit, Queen Camilla delivered a bespoke Roo replica to the New York Public Library for Winnie-the-Pooh, keeping the original Pooh dolls in a climate-controlled display. Roo, Pooh’s lost kangaroo friend, disappeared in the 1930s and the replica was crafted by Merrythought. The gesture promotes Camilla’s Queen’s Reading Room and commemorates the library’s long history with the Pooh characters, including their journey from Milne’s books to the NYPL and ongoing preservation efforts.

Pro-Palestinian Protests Leave New York City in Chaos

The New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman building has suffered at least $75,000 in graffiti damage caused by pro-Palestinian protests, with some carved reliefs potentially needing replacement. The worst damage occurred on Thanksgiving Day when protesters sprayed "Free Palestine" in dark green paint and smeared red handprints on the steps, fountain, and facade. The cleanup costs come as New York's libraries face budget cuts and have already canceled Sunday service. Cleaning the dark paint requires multiple applications of solvent, and certain elements may need to be replaced if too damaged. The library does not currently have a fundraising effort to cover the graffiti cleanup.

Pro-Palestinian Protesters Disrupt Thanksgiving Parades and Landmarks in NYC

Thirty-four pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York after disrupting the event by gluing themselves to the pavement and spray-painting "Free Palestine" on the New York Public Library. Some protesters wore white jumpsuits with fake blood and slogans. Thirty were issued summonses for trespassing, while four were criminally charged. The vandalism to the library comes at a time when budget cuts have affected the library system. The arrests occurred as a pause in fighting in Gaza went into effect, with aid trucks entering the Palestinian enclave.

Lost John Coltrane recordings to be released after discovery in NY Public Library.

Never-before-heard live recordings of John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy from their 1961 residency at New York’s Village Gate have been discovered in the New York Public Library and will be released next month. The recordings were lost in the library's archives for several decades before being rediscovered. The album, titled Evenings at the Village Gate, features classic Coltrane numbers and is the only live recording of the group’s legendary Village Gate performances. The recordings provide a special insight into Coltrane and Dolphy’s brief musical partnership, which encompassed several albums released between 1961 and 1963.
