Oxford Street to become car-free pedestrian hub after final approval

London mayor Sadiq Khan has given final approval to pedestrianise Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Transport for London will close the street to most traffic from 07:00–19:00, allow deliveries 00:00–07:00, and reroute buses via Wigmore Street and Henrietta Place with new crossings and stops as part of a plan to create a safer, more welcoming pedestrian space. The scheme followed two consultations, with 2,700 responses in the second and a majority in favour; initial support was 63%. Completion is targeted for September, with Westminster Council helping balance local needs and TfL monitoring impacts.

"Christian Singer Told to Stop by Police Officer in Public Misunderstanding"

A volunteer police officer, identified as Maya Hadzhipetkova, stopped Christian singer Harmonie London on Oxford Street, telling her she was not allowed to sing church songs outside of church grounds. The incident, captured on video, sparked backlash and calls for the officer to be sacked. The officer's actions were criticized for misinterpreting the law and infringing on freedom of religion. The area is regulated for busking, but there are no laws against singing on pavements. The Metropolitan Police is investigating the incident, and the singer's video has garnered significant attention on social media.
